SIMKINS SEPTEMBER! Free figure with order over $50
September 1, 2008
It's Simkins September! Our "Ausgang August" was so successful that we figured we'd continue the trend for another month with "Simkins September"!!! All through September we will be including a FREE Vivisect Playset Greg "Craola" Simkins figure (that's the Scurvy Nevil figure) with any order over $50! Here's a little bit about Craola- a really talented 2D artist who's work checking out in depth: Greg Simkins, aka "Craola", is a prolific 2D artist who works in sketch, graffiti, acrylic and other 2D media. In perusing his artwork, I am struck by the breathtaking detail and the trippy subject matter. However, what most impresses me, as someone who got his degree at school learning how to critique other people's artwork, is the finish of his pieces. By that I mean each individual piece has a feeling of completion. This is something I always struggled with myself in my own art- when is this piece finished? Does is need a background or some other small element that will make me feel that it's done? In particular, Craola's sketches (in the Sketches section of his website http://www.imscared.com/ ) are simple, beautifully detailed, and satisfyingly finished. I am jealous. He clearly knows what he's doing. One of my favorite elements of this section, if you click on all of the thumbnails to blow the images up, is that he seems to be either using found pieces of imperfect paper, with tears and chunks missing and sometimes stickers??? incorporated into the piece, or else he's working in a bit of collage into his sketches. (See sketches 156, 157, 161, 162, 168) In either case, it works alarmingly well. His characters do not live on the pages, they are coming OUT of the pages. I am not even going to get into his grafs, they're just nuts. What can I say? He's a master. His graf work is unlike anything I've seen, far more detailed and weird than the mindless repetitive block & bubble letters we see here in NYC. Most importantly, from our perspective, is Craola's contribution to the designer toy scene. Simkins has collaborated with Upper Playground, Kidrobot, Super Rad and Strangeco to produce designer toys. We expect to see lots more from him in this department. - Benny, Tenacious Toys Craola's website: http://www.imscared.com/ Craola's MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/craola About the Vivisect Playset project: STRANGEco presents a brand new multi-artist mini figure series, based on an annual art show hosted by Gallery 1988 and curated by Luke Chueh! The Vivisect Playset thematically focuses on the dissection and reconstruction of animals to demonstrate human emotion, and 7 artists that particpate regularly in the annual show have devised an incredible range of original character designs. The series features designs by Anthony Ausgang, Luke Chueh, Thomas Han, Peter Gronquist, Joe Ledbetter, Greg Simkins, Amanda Visell - plus a special collaborative design by Joe Ledbetter and Greg Simkins.
